The Purpose

Shenandoah Sound Drum and Bugle Corps was founded to advance the art of music through musical education and to teach music in the marching drum and bugle corps tradition.

The Corps was organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.  It was chartered as such under the provisions of Chapter 10 of Title 13.1 of the Code of Virginia, in April of 1993.

Shenandoah Sound provides an outlet for performance to those with an interest in drum & bugle corps.  The Corps acts as ambassadors for the promotion of the drum & bugle activity in the Northern Virginia, and surrounding areas.  The Corps is currently an affiliate of Drum Corps Associates (DCA), an organization which oversees and promotes drum & bugle activity throughout North America.

Shenandoah Sound has performed concerts and marched in parades and field competitions from New York to Florida.  Shenandoah Sound has sent representatives to perform in the DCA Championships, as well as the DCA Individual and Ensemble competitions.  For the 2005 season, Shenandoah Sound placed ninth in DCA Class A, and the Shenandoah Sound chorus and soprano soloist Bob Menear placed third in the I&E competition.

Commitments

Shenandoah Sound membership requirements are simple.  You need to have a desire to march drum and bugle corps.  You need the desire for personal achievement and enrichment.  Only by setting your own goals high do you experience the full benefits of the tradition that is drum and bugle corps.

Rehearsals are generally twice a month in the off-season and increase in frequency and duration as the competitive season progresses.

As with any organization of this caliber, there are many financial obligations to be met.  Members are also expected to participate in various fundraisers throughout the season.

The Tradition

Traditionally, drum and bugle corps have grown from the proud heritage handed down by military drummers and buglers of years past.  Some of today’s top corps have existed for more than 75 years.

Today, the tradition has evolved to include musicians of many diverse backgrounds.  What these musicians have in common is a desire to achieve their best, a willingness to set high goals for themselves and strive to reach them.  Ordinary people will not get this far.  These are very special people, it takes special people to march drum and bugle corps.  People who are not afraid to let the tradition become a part of them, to inspire and be inspired.

If this is your goal, your desire, you are cordially invited to become a member of Shenandoah Sound Drum and Bugle Corps !!!
